Known Issue: 1982 NLTCS Data

• Issue: IADL disability variables were incorrectly translated from Census raw data.  In the Census raw data, Screener question 23 was coded as a 7-digit field.  A '2', for example, anywhere in that field indicated a problem with item 2 on question 23, 'Do Laundry', and the corresponding variable, which is column 211 in the ASCII data or SAS variable SCN_19_B, should have been coded as a '1' for 'YES'.  All observations not coded with a '1' for 'YES' on that variable should have remained blank.
  
  
  • A value of '1' in any variable SCN_19_A-SCN_19_G indicates a disability in 'Prepare Meals'
  • A value of '2' in any variable SCN_19_A-SCN_19_G indicates a disability in 'Do Laundry'
  • A value of '3' in any variable SCN_19_A-SCN_19_G indicates a disability in 'Do light housework'
  • A value of '4' in any variable SCN_19_A-SCN_19_G indicates a disability in 'Shop for groceries'
  • A value of '5' in any variable SCN_19_A-SCN_19_G indicates a disability in 'Manage money'
  • A value of '6' in any variable SCN_19_A-SCN_19_G indicates a disability in 'Take medicine'
  • A value of '7' in any variable SCN_19_A-SCN_19_G indicates a disability in 'Make telephone calls'.
  
  
• Action: CDS recoded the affected variables and updated the codebook, pages 7-8, accordingly.
